Detox...

When you're trying to get your health back on track as most of us tend to do after the first of the year... a little detox can sometimes be the trick to moving things forward in a positive direction!

The BEST way to flush out toxins though... is WATER. Lots and lots of water! And then if you spend all your time in the bathroom, you won't have time for anything else!

But seriously though... staying hydrated is key for so many reasons... including better skin, reduced headaches & fatigue. And when we workout/sweat regularly... it increases the amount of water we need!

Here's a recipe for a Detox Water that has circulated through the Bloomsquad page a few times over the years:

To make one serving of detox water, add 3-5 slices of cucumber, half a lemon, and a few sprigs of mint leaves to 24 ounces of ice-cold water. You can also add sliced peeled ginger (about a 1-inch piece of ginger root, or to taste) for a spicy kick. It's even more effective if you make this and let it soak in a pitcher overnight! Here's some of the benefits to adding these things to your water:

  • Lemon: Lemon water makes for a powerful detox drink; lemon juice helps to cleanse and alkalize the body. Add one thinly sliced lemon to a large pitcher, or squeeze fresh lemon juice into your glass.

  • Mint: Mint adds a touch of sweetness without the sugar to your water, and it also helps settle your stomach and aids in digestion as well.

  • Cucumber: Cucumber water isn't just for spas. Adding a few slices of cucumber to your water makes for excellent rehydration, and cucumber also contains anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Ginger: The spicy root helps cleanse out your system, aids in digestion, and settles your stomach. A little goes a long way, so start with a few thin slices or grate a tiny piece into your water and taste before adding more as necessary.

Another recipe shared recently by a Bloomsquad friend is for Crockpot Detox Soup. It's full of yummy veggies, lean protein and a broth base. Personally I like chicken broth better, but the recipe calls for beef broth and either is a great foundation for a super healthy meal!

Crockpot Detox Soup

Ingredients 1 medium onion, diced 3 large carrots peeled and sliced into rounds 3 cups frozen green beans 4 cups of chopped cabbage ( about 1/2 a large head) head of cabbage cored and chopped 1 cup diced celery 16 ounce can red kidney beans, drained 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1.5 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2-3 teaspoons minced garlic 1 TB dried parsley 2 bay leaves 1 (28oz) can crushed tomatoes 4 cups beef broth 2 cups water 2 cups, loosely packed fresh baby spinach.

Directions: 1. Place onions, carrots, green beans, cabbage, celery, and beans at the bottom of your crockpot.

2. Top with chicken breasts. Add salt, pepper, garlic, bay leaf, and parsley. Pour in crushed tomatoes, beef broth, and water into the pot.

3. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or on HIGH for 4 hours, or until vegetables are tender, and chicken is throughly cooked. Remove bay leaves. Remove chicken breasts from crockpot and shred with 2 forks.

4. Place shredded meat back into the crockpot. Stir in baby spinach and cover. Continue cooking for 5 more mins, until spinach is cooked down.
